In November 2023, WISHH organized a 27-person delegation to partake in the World Aquaculture Society’s AFRAQ23 conference held in Lusaka, Zambia. AFRAQ23 focuses on the latest research and developmental aspects of aquaculture in Africa.

The delegation, consisting of farmers, academics, feed manufacturers, animal health specialists, and government workers from Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, and Cote d’Ivoire attended the event to buoy WISHH’s continuing aquaculture development work in Africa. As the aquaculture market increases in the region, so too, can its reliance of U.S. soy for fish feed.

The conference helped bridge the gap between research and practical on-farm implementation as WISHH partners actively engaged in networking and knowledge sharing, contributing significantly to discussions on new technologies, fish health, extension services, industry trends, and sector development work.

The delegation presented multiple conference abstracts and helped highlight the presence of U.S. soy as a force for growing the region’s aquaculture industry. Additionally, WISHH led a panel discussion on fish feed and best practices in aquaculture development.

Funds from USDA Agriculture Trade Promotion and Foreign Market Development programs supported attendance at the conference.
