President Trump threatened, via Twitter, to close the southern border of Mexico on Friday. While ASA is not taking a position on the border wall, ASA is concerned with the President’s statements, as a closing of the border could severely disrupt trade and the flow of agriculture products. Mexico is the number two market for U.S. soybeans and soy products, with a value of more than $2 billion. While explicit details of how the President would envision enacting this policy have not been forthcoming, significant concern for the negative economic consequences has been raised by Members of Congress from both sides of the aisle. At this point, it is unclear if the President’s threat was a one-off comment or if the Administration has been tasked to look into executing this policy.
