Exploration of Nutritional Needs in Highly Impacted Areas by Country

Botswana:
One of WISHH’s first projects was in collaboration with the University of Botswana’s Department of Home Economics and Agricultural Extension. This project was undertaken to learn more about a population in a nation with the highest level of HIV prevalence in the world at the time of nearly 40%.

The second collaboration with the University of Botswana was undertaken to understand the potential role for high-quality and economical protein enrichment for orphans and vulnerable children. Because many of these children attended day care facilities in Gaborone, a six-month pilot project was undertaken to explore pre-intervention status and growth curves as well as post intervention growth of children under the age of five years. Uganda:
In collaboration with ACDI/VOCA and their implementing partners, a pilot monitoring project addressing nutrition-related issues was added to the Title II PL480 Feeding Program for PLHA in Uganda. Partners included World Vision, Catholic Relief Services, Africare, and The AIDS Service Organisation (TASO). The collaboration included Makerere University (Gakenia Wamuyu Maina, PhD was the principle investigator) and the Ssemwanga Centre for implementation and data evaluation. Mozambique:
Planet Aid’s Total Control of the Epidemic (TCE) program in the Sofala Province of Mozambique implemented both soy restaurants and soyfoods distribution programs funded by the USDA Food for Progress program. In collaboration with WISHH, a monitoring and evaluation program was planned, implemented, and analyzed. The program analysis was captured in reports at the links below:

In addition, a sustainability study was completed for the soy restaurants through Vaal University of Technology’s Institute of Sustainable Living. Though the restaurants were supported by this program, it is a hope that future installations under programs such as these will be able to apply lessons learned to improve sustainability.

Kenya:
In collaboration with Catholic Relief Service-Kenya partners in the Nyanza Province of Kenya, WISHH implemented a program to determine the differences in impact between three types of rations. This controlled pilot study included an evaluation of best ways to evaluate malnutrition in children under five years of age, which was subsequently presented at the American Dietetic Association’s Food and Nutrition Conference and Exposition in 2006 and later accepted for publication in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.

Full Report: Pilot Study: Protein Supplementation with Value-Added Soy Products (VASPs) in Collaboration between WISHH and Catholic Relief Services-Kenya for Their Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) Program in the Nyanza Province in Kenya

Pakistan:
In collaboration with Catholic Relief Service-Pakistan a pilot program to introduce value added soy products (textured soy protein and defatted soy flour) into the diets of HIV infected individuals and their families receiving services through HIV/AIDS clinics and other organizations in five sites throughout the country.

South Africa:
Under the Soy in Southern Africa (SISA) program funded through USAID, public-private partnerships were developed to design and implement a placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical trial of the benefit of soy protein supplementation in HIV-infected adults in the Western Cape region. Product partners included The Solae Company, TetraPak, and Dewfresh. Research partnerships were made with The Solae Company, faculty from the University of Stellenbosch, and the Provincial Department of Health. Full reports will become available when the study is completed and unblinded.

Service Success: Soy Protein in HIV/AIDS Study Enrolment and Data Collection

Guatemala:
Several projects were explored in Guatemala, including the development of a nutrition program for the Jospice Internacional San Jose through the Jose Rozas Botran Foundation. This and other projects are in process and reports are expected as the services progress.
