WISHH, Solae Company and University of Stellenbosch Announce Unique Partnership to Study HIV Nutrition
The World Initiative for Soy in Human Health ( WISHH) and The Solae Company announced on December 1, 2006 that they will collaborate on protein research with the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa. The six-month study will fill a void in data concerning the role of protein supplementation for people living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). To date, no one has taken a systematic look at the value of protein supplementation in under-served populations. This research, which will take place in South Africa, aims to determine the effects of high-quality protein supplementation on the health and nutrition of people living with HIV/AIDS. Click here for more details on this HIV Nutrition Effort.

Researchers will compare the effect(s) of a micronutrient-fortified beverage containing soy protein isolate to a product with equal calories and micronutrients, but without supplemental protein.

Kenya Continues Growth with Defatted Soy Flour and Textured Soy Protein
Soy Kenya continues to see growth in the market for defatted soy flour. Kenyan flour millers are blending the defatted soy flour with other flours, including cassava, greengrams, millet and sorghum, to sell to their customers. Kenyan consumers are purchasing the foods for infant feeding, porridges, HIV patient nutrition and more. Similarly Chemicals and Solvents is importing textured soy protein that is now being sold in supermarkets, like Nakumatt, which is the largest grocery chain in Kenya. Supermarket customers are repackaging the product in smaller quantities and selling it at kiosks and in rural areas. Bakeries are also buying it to enhance samosas, meat pies and more.

Soy Glyceollins May Fight Breast, Ovarian Cancers Says Tulane Research
Tulane University researchers in the United States announced on January 9 that a compound produced by specially grown soybeans may prove to be successful in fighting the growth of breast and ovarian cancers. Tulane University cancer researcher Matthew Burow tested the compound, known as glyceollin, on mice with ovarian and breast cancer tumors that are stimulated by the hormone estrogen. Over time, the compound stopped further growth of the tumors by interfering with the tumor’s ability to respond to estrogen. According to Burow, the finding is significant because of the lack of effective therapies available to women with advanced breast or ovarian cancer. Unlike some of the available therapies, the glyceollins did not stimulate uterine cancer growth. The results of the research were published in the December 2006 issue of Clinical Cancer Research. http://clincancerres.aacrjournals.org/

European Journal of Clinical Nutrition publishes new study on soy consumption and prostate cancer prevention
Low prostate cancer incidence and high soy intake in Asian countries suggest a possible protective effect of soy foods against prostate cancer. The goal of this pilot study was to evaluate the feasibility of a randomized, crossover soy trial among men and to investigate the effects of daily soy intake on serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and testosterone levels, according to researchers at the University of Hawaii Cancer Research Center of Hawaii. The report, "Serum prostate-specific antigen but not testosterone levels decrease in a randomized soy intervention among men," is newly published data in European Journal of Clinical Nutrition. http://www.nature.com/ejcn/index.html
