International Organizations Participate in
WISHH Midwest Soy Protein Workshop

St. Louis…ASA Leader Letter... October 7, 2009… Representatives of international organizations and businesses who want to learn about soy’s role in developing country diets came to Illinois this week to participate in the WISHH 2009 Midwest Soy Protein Workshop.

The American Soybean Association’s (ASA) World Initiative for Soy in Human Health (WISHH) program’s Midwest Workshop attracted participants from diverse countries ranging from Honduras to Bangladesh to South Africa for soyfoods training and a farm visit.

The potential for soy use has attracted attendees who lead nutritional campaigns and launch new food products as world hunger rates have hit a new record - one in six people today are malnourished.

ASA Board member Mike Cunningham and his wife Kelly hosted a farm tour for participants at their operation in Bismarck, Ill. The National Soybean Research Laboratory (NSRL) at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign provided information on soy’s health benefits, demonstrated equipment to process soybeans and offered a hands-on soyfoods cooking experience in the NSRL test kitchen.

Sponsors for the Workshop were: Cargill, gold level; Solae, silver level; Archer Daniels Midland, Monsanto and the Monsanto Fund, bronze level. Qualified State Soybean Boards from across the country also support the program, with WISHH committee members Ken Bartlett, Darrel McGriff, Andy Welden and Pat Dumoulin attending, along with several other Illinois Soybean Association Board members and soy ambassadors.
