WISHH Sends Soy Flour For African Food Trials

Through funding from the USDA’s Quality Samples Program (QSP), WISHH purchased and shipped a 20-foot container of defatted soy flour to South Africa. Shipped from Mankato, Minnesota, the soy arrived in Durban, South Africa in October 2008. The samples are being used to introduce the advantages of using U.S. defatted soy flour in baking applications. Impilo Products, the company receiving the shipment, met with CHS representative Pam Schubbe, WISHH and the U.S. Women in Soy team while in South Africa in August 2008. Additional containers were prepared for Senegal and Nigeria.

WISHH and The Solae Company are collaborating with researchers at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa to fill a void in data concerning the role of protein supplementation for people living with HIV/AIDS. Researchers compared the effect(s) of a micronutrient-fortified beverage containing soy protein isolate to a product with equal calories and micronutrients, but without supplemental protein. Contact the WISHH office for the results of this study on the value of the protein supplementation.

SoyCow Training in South Africa

Entrepreneurs received training on soyfoods at a new center that WISHH helped establish with Eden Manufacturing and the Rural Development Initiative (REDI) in South Africa.  The training hub is an important component in WISHH's efforts under the Soy in Southern Africa Alliance (SISA) supported by the U.S. Agency for International Development.  The center is the home to SoyCow and VitaGoat systems that allow soybeans to be processed into soymilk, tofu, yogurts, soft cheeses and more.
