Mozambique

Mozambique ChildrenIn July 2008 baseline measures were taken prior to the initiation of daily meal provision that includes high-quality soy protein in a group of children between 5-10 years of age. These orphans and vulnerable children now receive rations as a part of the ADPP/Planet Aid Soy Restaurant Program.

The 5-10 year old age group of children are less often targeted for nutrition intervention. However, the continuing growth spurts and development are dependent on continuing good nutrition practices and some catch up for both weight and height can be achieved, which may ultimately improve health, survival, and several other outcomes important to development programs.

In the 367 evaluable records health indicator problems often related to inadequate body protein stores were reported in 75% of the children, including diarrhea (34%), respiratory problems (14%), and skin sores (13%). Because fever and malaria were commonly reported as illnesses, children have an extra risk for wasting of protein stores.

Stunting, a marker of protein deficiency, was seen in 17% of the children. Hand grip evaluations were completed on 355 of the children to determine both volume and function of body protein. 41% had inadequate function on the right side and 30% had inadequate muscle function on the left side when evaluated according to gender and age.

Mozambique Soy RestaurantsThese results suggested that there is a need for the improvement of high quality protein intake. The soy restaurants will fill a real documented need. Expected results include improvement in stunting, hand grip strength, and symptoms of diarrhea, respiratory disease, and skin sores.

It is expected that the Soy Restaurants will help to develop an awareness of the health benefits of soyfoods and the inclusion of high-quality protein in considerations for feeding assistance in populations of children, even above the age of 5 years old.
